Weekend in Amsterdam 1/1/16 through 1/4/16

A weekend in Amsterdam...yes please! Y'all. It literally took us longer to get the airport than the 45 minute flight to the Netherlands, we will def be going back! Gotta see those tulips.

Our weekend started with planes, trains and um, well, trams. We landed, whisked through customs and trained into the city, then trammed to our Air BnB. Surprisingly, this was the 1st time we used Air BnB...highly recommend it. Our host, AnneMarie was a delight, the place was even better. It was in a PERFECT location. It felt like we were in a little village just inside the beautiful canals.

We immediately searched for some food. That Michael, he is hungry at all hours. Someone told us that Amsterdam doesn't have good food....that someone must have not eaten where we did. All the food was fabulous. Most of the places we ate came as recs from sweet AnneMarie (point for Air BnB). We found this cafe right around the corner, Bar Moustache. Bar Moustache Cafe has the best pizza. (We, um I sort of have this obsession with pizza since moving to London...hmmmmm)

We wondered around the canals. A lot. Over the whole weekend, but seriously they are gorgeous, even in January cold, wet weather. It was our favorite part by far. We found this guy on the 1st night...playing a bugel in the canals. As he turned the wheel in his boat, it made music. It was so crazy and beautiful. Walking up to this music, I felt like we were in a movie.

Ok, back to food. Friday night we went to the Eye Museum. Really interesting place. It's a Film Institute (we immediately thought of the Sollevelds...they would have loved it), part restaurant, part film school, part museum, part cinema AND a beautiful view of Amsterdam. Again, a great meal and given it was New Years Day ... a great way to start the New Year. Although, we missed the black eyed peas and cabbage.

Saturday was well wet and cold. We took our time, loving our Air BnB. We cooked breakfast in, sipped on coffee and listened to classical music. We finally got out and about, did a canal tour, had lunch at this fabulous spot, Cafe De Plantage. We explored some other neighborhoods, got a little lost, found our way to Indonesian food.

Sunday was beautiful, still cold, but we saw peeks of sunshine and it was lovely to walk around. We checked out Van Gogh's museum. Really great, highly recommend. (And get tix ahead of time, the line was ridic) My favorite were the "Irises". Just amazing to see in person. We also got to see "The scream" in an exhibition showing the parallels between Van Gogh and Munch. Amazing to see their similarities and subtle differences.

Sunday was definitely our favorite day. We explored more canals, loved their crooked houses, found different neighborhoods and marveled at the idea of making Nashville a bike friendly city. So while we are on the bike subject, Michael's got our next million dollar idea waiting (hint: bikes+Nashville). Meanwhile, I think the Amsterdam bikes are great, somewhat....er...very agressive , but love the idea. (We've even started riding bikes in London...on the other side of the road...mind blown.)

Oh and we found The Hoxton (for those of you that know, Michael loves a Hoxton Hotel) and with The Hoxton, we found some Netherlands Gin because, well that's what we do.

Till the next adventure....cheers y'all!
